Joel was referred to Project Access San Diego for rectal bleeding and he received a colonoscopy through Kaiser Permanente Surgery Day on March 26, 2011. He had been having symptoms for over three years but could not afford to see a gastroenterologist much less pay for testing. Unfortunately, the findings were positive for a rare form of congenital colorectal cancer. Thanks to Kaiser Permanente’s support, Joel recently recovered from surgery and completed radiation and chemotherapy. Because of our partnership with Kaiser his children also received genetic testing to identify the need for close monitoring. Since being referred to Project Access San Diego, Joel has received the care he needs that can ultimately save his life, and help in the prevention and detection of this syndrome in his children. He is most appreciative to all of those who have helped him and his family deal with these serious health issues.
